The Sustainability Public Service Announcement (SPSA) Project at The City College of New York is a campus messaging campaign on sustainability topics with digital content created by over 1100 City College students in 58 courses and shown continually on the public display screens throughout campus. The purpose of the SPSA Project is to amplify sustainability-related teaching, learning, communication, messaging, activism, community engagement and career development on campus, as well as open new opportunities for internships for CCNY students throughout New York City. Sponsored by the Campus Engagement Network (CEN), this interdisciplinary SPSA Project led by faculty members Stephanie Rose and Pamela Stemberg is based in the School of Education and the Division of Humanities & the Arts and brings together 29 instructors from schools, divisions, and departments across The City College of New York to participate in the SPSA Faculty Learning Community. Participating instructors incorporated the Sustainability Public Service Announcement (SPSA) Common Assignment in academic year 2023-24 into their 58 courses. The SPSA Common Assignment asks students to create engaging 30-second digital PSAs for the campus community about an environmental organization in NYC and their internship offerings, a sustainability issue, or a City College campus sustainability initiative or project. The SPSA Project may spark student interest in sustainability topics for future coursework, community engagement, and eventually become a focus brought into the many economic sectors that employ City College students. The SPSA project touches the entire City College campus community of over 14,000 people through the digital messages shared on the 40 public display screens located in buildings throughout campus.
